Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) - Heat Abatement

MKThink has been supporting Hawaii public schools for over five years develop solutions to tackle high classroom temperatures as the climate gets warmer. Majority of the schools are aging post-war buildings without air conditioning. One aspect of this work is to prioritize the order improvements should be made to schools which led us to put temperature sensors in classrooms to get real data. I created a variety of maps of temperature sensor data in ArcGIS (including the one shown below) and analysis in Excel with additional considerations to create the priority list.

YMCA - Healthy and Sustainable Environments

The YMCA facilities in Bay Area have been working with RoundhouseOne and Air Angel (MKThink subsidiaries) to ensure healthy environments. 11 locations were installed with environmental sensors allowing the YMCA team to make decisions based on real data. The YMCA and RoundhouseOne are continuing to work together to create optimal environments across the YMCA portfolio. I have been supporting this effort by determining the most effective way to utilize RoundhouseOne technology and create strategies for improving the health of YMCA spaces. The following image is one slide from a deck showing how a YMCA location in San Francisco will be used as a pilot and showcase for healthy environments.

Microgrid Feasibility Analysis - Berkeley Energy Assurance Transformation (BEAT)

The City of Berkeley was awarded a $1.5 million grant to research the feasibility of creating a clean energy microgrid community that would provide sustainability and resilience benefits. The Berkeley Energy Assurance Transformation (BEAT) project analyzed how to create a microgrid in downtown Berkeley to provide solar power to key City facilities for daily use and to be used as clean back-up power, if power were to be disrupted. I analyzed additional buildings that could be added to the microgrid in the future based on resiliency benefits (ie. bathrooms, kitchen facilities) and solar potential.

Climate Action Plan Map

I created the following graphic (designed to be interactive) as a method to visually display the City’s efforts related to climate action planning. Each icon could be clicked on where it would then display information on that initiative.

I was tasked with supporting Calaveras Healthy Impact Product Solutions (CHIPS) which works to hire the local community including tribal bands to perform forest and meadow restoration, watershed stewardship, cultural site work, fire-safe fuel reduction, and fuel break construction. The organization has contracts and agreements with private landowners, local fire-safe councils, tribal partners, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and a number of national forests and parks. The biomass plant helps accelerate the pace of forest stewardship through providing a waste strategy while providing jobs, electricity and by-products for the community. I created the following graphic as part of community outreach efforts as a simple way to explain the project to those that are unfamiliar with the work.
